Creating Adventures at Home
About
About

Adventure KIts for Sick kidS aims to encourage families with chronically or terminally ill childrento live life's experiences, at home or the bedside. The Kits provide some structure, ideas and activities for 'adventures' on specific themes because when time is precious, the last thing you want is to shop around for the right 'bits'. Our kits do the hard work, and all that is needed is a bit of time, some good wholesome food, and some good humour!

Our philosophy is based on the wisdom and observation of Casare Pavese (1908 - 1950), an Italian philosopher, who stated that:

"we do not remember days, we remember moments.
The richness of life lies in memories we have forgotten."
                                                                       (C.Pavese)

We aim to encourage families to create and capture those special  moments, especially when it can feel like 'Ground Hog Day' around medical routines and interventions.

The creators of AKISS have experienced their own 'Ground Hog Day', having had a child, Scarlett Rose, lose her life to Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a rare, incurable
degenerative genetic neuromuscular disease, in October 2006. Though her time was short, through a bit of planning and determination, Scarlett and her family enjoyed many seemingly trivial, 'taken for granted' and special 'Adventures'
in the too short, eight months of her life. What remains are memories of special moments, and  a rich and lovingly
imperfect record of events and activities of her short life.

This treasure is called 'Scarlett's Adventures' or the Adventures of Scarlett Rose Taylor.

The Scarlett Rose Taylor SMA Fund is a community supporter of the Women's and Children's Hospital Foundation in Adelaide. It was established in Scarlett's name, to support families with children who have SMA or other degenerative neuromuscular or genetic conditions, and the WCH palliative care unit. The fund is supported by AKISS. Visit the site for further information on SMA and products that  assist our efforts to raise funds. See www.scarlettrosesmafund.com.au.
